My Father's Warnings Against the Leviathan, the Dragon of the East

My father*, may he rest in peace, was born in Russia-Poland in 1908. Many of the adults he knew, the Jews in the village of Yenzhiveh where he lived, were veterans of the disastrous Russo-Japanese War that had occurred only a few years before he had been born. Some of these veterans came home famous, like Joseph Trumpeldor, a man who didn’t live in Yenzhiveh. He lost an arm in battle, and emigrated to the Land of Israel to help found Jewish villages there. He died fighting Arabs in 1920 at Tel Hai. His name is memorialized in the Zionist youth organization, Beitar - בית''ר -, which is the mnemonic for - brit hano’ár ha’ivrí ‘al shém yósef trumpeldór – “Covenant of Hebrew Youth Founded upon Joseph Trumpeldor’s name”. Most of the veterans of the Russo-Japanese War, however, resumed their daily lives and did not rise to such fame.

But my father heard from these war veterans nevertheless. They would talk about the battles they fought, the country they fought in, and the wondrous and terrible sights they saw there. One needs to understand some history to realize that the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5 was not fought in either Russia or Japan. It was fought in China, over Chinese territory. At the time, the Chinese Empire was so weak it could not keep out foreigners from fighting over its land. During this humiliating period in Chinese history, Jewish Russian soldiers saw China, its millions of inhabitants crowding Manchuria, and saw, amongst other things, that the symbol of this country was a dragon.

Only one dragon was known to Jews – the Leviathan.

In stories my father related, he told me to beware the Chinese – that they were a sleeping giant who would one day awake. He told me that the Chinese were like the Leviathan – which he called livi-yússen, the Yiddish pronunciation of the Hebrew word líviatán.

His description was as follows:

“The livi-yússen is a giant whale, and the world rests on this giant whale. One day the livi-yússen will overturn, and when it does, the world will overturn.”

I would listen to this fantastic yarn and say, “Yes, Dad.” But my father had a nasty habit of being right, even when it appeared that it was impossible that he should be so at the time.

A more detailed description of the livi-yússen is found at the site “Judeo-Christian Demons”:
Leviathan was a large whale-like sea creature, who may have had 7 heads according to some legends. A lengthy description of him comes from the Hebrew Bible, the Book of Job:

His strong scales are his pride,
Shut up as with a tight seal.
One is so near to another
That no air can come between them.
They are joined one to another;
They clasp each other and cannot be separated.
His sneezes flash forth light,
And his eyes are like
The eyelids of the morning.
Out of his mouth go burning torches;
Sparks of fire leap forth.
Out of his nostrils smoke goes forth
As from a boiling pot and burning rushes.
His breath kindles coals,
And a flame goes forth from his mouth.
In his neck lodges strength,
And dismay leaps before him.
The folds of his flesh are joined together,
Firm on him and immovable. His heart is as hard as a stone,
Even as hard as a lower millstone.
When he raises himself up, the mighty fear;
Because of the crashing they are bewildered.
The sword that reaches him cannot avail,
Nor the spear, the dart or the javelin.
He regards iron as straw, Bronze as rotten wood.
The arrow cannot make him flee;
Sling-stones are turned into stubble for him.
Clubs are regarded as stubble;
He laughs at the rattling of the javelin.
His under-parts are like sharp potsherds;
He spreads out like a threshing sledge on the mire.
He makes the depths boil like a pot;
He makes the sea like a jar of ointment.
Behind him he makes a wake to shine;
One would think the deep to be gray-haired.
Nothing on earth is like him,
One made without fear.
He looks on everything that is high;
He is king over all the sons of pride.
[Job 42:15-32]

Also, according to Isaiah 27:1, on the Day of Judgment the Lord will slay Leviathan:

'In that day the Lord will punish,
With His great, cruel, mighty sword
Leviathan the Elusive Serpent —
Leviathan the Twisting Serpent;
He will slay the Dragon of the sea.'
[Isaiah 27:1 (bold print mine)]

The site also quotes passages from the apocryphal Book of Enoch [1 Enoch 60:7-8], Babylonian Talmud, Bava Batra (75a) and the Bible, Psalms 74:26, but the main descriptions are reproduced above.

So, now that we have a fuller description of the Leviathan at hand, let’s look again at my father’s fantastic yarn. In the 1950s it indeed sounded like nothing more than that. The world was divided between two giant powers, the United States and the Soviet Union, and everyone worried that these two powers would go to war one day and leave the planet nothing but a radioactive cinder, and that the inheritors of the planet would be... cockroaches. Indeed, Albert Einstein had said, “I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.”

In this world, China did not count too greatly, in spite of its many millions of people, but the Chinese Red Army had fought the United States Armed Forces (and their allies, the Turks, Australians, and New Zealanders) to a draw in Korea. At the time, the United States was the manufacturing giant of the planet. One could buy everything in the States from soup to nuts, and see on the label, “Made in America”. This label did not mean that all the parts were imported from foreign countries and assembled in America – the lame meaning it holds today. This label meant that everything except the most raw materials unobtainable in the United States came from America.

In this world, the dollar had real meaning – from the ring of the silver in the silver dollars my dad would toss me every now and again – to the fact that an ounce of gold was worth $35, that this price was the benchmark of the international financial system, that everybody owed money to the United States of America, that oil was bought and sold in dollars, that air and hotel fares were quoted in dollars, and that English, the binding language of the United States, was the language used by all pilots in the sky.

Oh, how the world has changed in the last 50 years!

The Samsung 753s computer screen that shows me what I’m typing now was probably made in Korea. The cannibalized CRT that powers the computer displaying this image was made in China or Korea. In fact, the only things that I can safely say were ‘made in America’ in my rental home in Israel is the desk my father bought me in 1960, the chair he obtained from Brooklyn College that I’m sitting on right now, the Southwestern Bell Trimline Freedom Phone on my desk to my left (which I’ve had forever), four bookcases made from hard wood in the States in the 1960s, me, my wife, and my kids.

Let’s not talk about the dollar. It has no ring to it. Not anymore. The Pocahantas tokens I have in my drawer that say “one dollar” on them have barely any intrinsic value at all. The same goes for all the other tokens that say “half dollar”, “quarter dollar” “one dime” and “five cents”.

Let’s not talk about what is manufactured in the United States. A year ago, I might have said cars and boats, but today, “Made in China” is far more likely to be seen on manufactured goods here and everywhere else in the world. Let’s not talk about who owns all those bonds the United States Treasury has been hustling in the last few years. “Owned in China” is stamped upon them as well.

Some folks talk about the United States being the “last superpower”.

Really?

To be terribly blunt, about the only wealth-creating nation on the planet today is China. Today, 50 years after my father told me about the livi-yússen, the giant whale the world sits upon, China is the giant manufacturing power the world relies upon for a whole host of goods. Australian kids learn Mandarin – not because they are interested, but because they understand who the real power in their neck of the woods is. The power that China wields is indirect – but palpable. A China-friendly regime rules in Nepal. The nations in Southeast Asia are careful not to challenge the “elder brother” in Peking directly. When the United States needs money, there is usually a trip to Peking for some hard negotiating (a.k.a. begging) involved. Chinese influence can be seen throughout Latin America.

But there is more. Twice in recent years, Chinese military officials have threatened to use nuclear weapons to counter the United States. The Chinese are a careful lot, not given to empty threats, bluff or bluster. While these threats to attack the United States with nuclear weapons are not extant today, they have been made, and the American ruling elites have taken note. And it does not take a lot to see that a nuclear exchange between the Americans and the Chinese would be a lot like that livi-yússen overturning, what my father described 50 years ago.

When we look at what the livi-yússen really is – a dragon, the symbol of China - we see what may well be truth in my father’s warnings. Today, at least 1½ billion people inhabit the People’s Republic of China. And if this livi-yússen overturns, the world will indeed overturn with it.

Dad, do you always have to be right?

* Dedicated to Louis Kossover, זיסקן לייב בן צבי-הערש, may his memory be for a blessing for his family and for all the People of Israel, who died on 26 June 1976.

The Failing Grades of a Man with Bad Intentions - B. Hussein Obama

בס''ד

This was pulled up from AOL News and these are my "grades" for Mr. Obama. A few points here. There was no "F" option that I remember - so he got "D"'s in their stead. In essence this man needs to improve his performance from what is, in reality, a failing grade. He impressed me as good with the public appearances - I didn't count his stupid remarks on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno as a "public appearance". If I did, the man would have gotten a "C". In addition, I interpreted "energy" to mean Obama's energy, his personal effort. He hasn't slid into the Reagan slumberland - yet. But he does appear overwhelmed by what he is attempting to do.

The important thing missing from this "report card" was an assessment of his intentions. And it ts the assessment of his intentions that is the important issue here.

His intentions do not appear to be good. This is true across the board. His foreign policy is appeasement of America's enemies, "Appeasement" with a capital "A". His economic policy is making America dependent on nations that would prefer to see her knocked from her perch - like Russia or China. Like any greasy Chicago politician, he is paying off his contributors - like AIG.

This is not "hope", it is hopelessness. This is not "change", it is more of the same corruption the folks on Lake Michigan have come to expect from the denizens in public office there.

Of course, this is what America is cursed with, having elected Obama. But I supported him knowing that he would emerge in time, as he is emerging, as an enemy of the Jewish people and an enemy of the State of Israel. The evident enmity of the Obama administration for the Jewish people and for the acme of the dreams of the Jewish People, an independent country where they can live free of foreign persecution, is the only lining of hope to help in overthrowing a corrupt and vicious regime that rules in Jerusalem, tools of a corrupt and venal pack of criminals who live in Tel Aviv and its environs. The possibility that our reservists, the soldiers who must defend this land, will see what is necessary and do what is necessary, is why I supported an open enemy over a false friend.

Prime minister designate Netanyahu and his bought out regime will bow to the trash in Washington's setting sun as the high priests bowed towards the rising sun in the Temple in Jerusalem before its destruction at the hands of NebuHadnetzar. Hopefully, our young men in uniform will realize the evil, and do what is necessary to correct it. They cannot overthrow or attempt to overthrow Obama. Their target must be closer to home. B. Hussein Obama is the target marker above the target. Those who bow to him are the ones who must get the bullet in the back.

Israeli Government Planning to Split Jerusalem and Other Downers from the Middle East

בס''ד

Published 14 September in Blogcritics Magazine

While Americans have been paying attention to their presidential race, things have been happening around them. Perhaps with the Palin wet t-shirt party raging in the press, nobody really wants to know. Sarah Palin brings everything a newsman wants in a story, controversy, sex and a pretty face. So, it falls to this writer to talk about the unpleasant things happening in and around the Middle East where pretty faces are as rare as pigs wearing lipstick.

First of all, an American consul general finally admitted what everybody has known for months and has been denying - that the Israeli government has been talking about splitting up Jerusalem in a so-called "peace" agreement. And according to the Jerusalem Post, the Kadima Party is in an uproar. Why they should be in an uproar is puzzling. These are the crooks and politicians who surrounded Ariel Sharon as he left the Likud Party specifically so that he wouldn't have to sing shtei gadót hayardén "Both Sides of the Jordan" (the Revisionist Zionists' anthem, adopted by the Likud) anymore and so that he could push the agenda of the Shlomtzion Party he had founded thirty-four years ago - a Arab State in Judea, Samaria and Gaza.

If that were the only bad news, well, one could live with it. The Israeli government has been committing treason since it agreed to surrender Judea and Samaria in the Oslo "Peace" Accords that have only cost 5,000 lives so far. So, what else is new? Traitors in Jerusalem is a story as old as the Book of Ezekiel and the Book of Kings. That is not really news. It's just that the piece of scum that sits in the prime minister's chair, whatever his or her name turns out to be, can no longer deny (even though they do deny) that Israel is negotiating over Jerusalem. And the SHAS Party, the pack of crooks who bring an evil name to the Middle Eastern Jews they allege to represent, the same pack of crooks who promised to leave the government if Jerusalem were to be negotiated, can no longer sit in the Cabinet without showing themselves to be the utter prostitutes most of us have known them to be ever since they voted to bring YitzHak Rabin to power in 1992.

But there is more bad news - and nobody seems to be paying attention. Looking at the Debkafiles website one sees it piling up. Let's take a glance away from the Palin wet t-shirt party for a moment, shall we?

First the good news, an old article from 12 July about extending the term of the head of the Mossad (Israel's spy agency) into 2009 according to the article,

by extending the Mossad director, Meir Dagan's tenure for another year until the end of 2009, Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert has put in place a vital constituent for a possible eleventh-hour unilateral strike at Iran's nuclear facilities.

Given that the Islamic Republic has threatened to wipe us off the map, a pre-emptive strike to retard these efforts is the very least we in Israel should be planning. We do not have the capability to wipe Iran off the map, but we can at least try to "avert the severe decree". But along with the sweet smelling rose comes the thorn. The Bush administration is refusing to sell or give Israel the equipment it needs to pull this off, or the permission to refuel over Iraqi airspace (which the United States presently controls). According to Arutz Sheva which is reporting this story, "Israel may soon be left with no realistic option to strike Iran's nuclear facilities and no time to find another solution." We see here the exact same pattern that we saw in Gruzia (Georgia) - the Americans betraying a country they pretend is an ally.

While the Americans twist the knife in Israel's back, the Russians, determined to reassert their role as a world power, have been helping the Iranians build the Bushehr nuclear reactor. In addition, US-Russian naval rivalries have heated up in the Black Sea, Caspian Sea and Persian Gulf (Debkafiiles, 8 September), threatening to break out into real conflict in the near future. Russian units raided Georgian airfields (Debkafiiles, 6 September), airfields that Israel had hoped to use in a strike on Iran. Thus, the Russians effectively cut off another possible route of attack on Iran. Iran's al Qods (the Iranian terrorist command), Hizballah secretly integrated rocket and commando units (Debkafiles, 7 September). According to this article,

this may not have been news to US vice president Dick Cheney, when he "revealed" Saturday, Sept. 6, that Russia had sold advanced weapons to Syria and Iran, some of which had been channeled to Lebanon and Iraq. However, Israeli president Shimon Peres, who responded by waving aside the need for an Israeli attack on Iran, was clearly out of the picture evolving ominously across the border in Lebanon. There, Iran and Syria are deepening their stranglehold on Lebanon and preparing to attack Israel by using al-Qods' resources to further fortify Hizballah. The new accord enables the two terrorist machines to fight under a unified command controlled from Tehran.

According to Debkafiles, Israeli officials remain oblivious to the threat of direct Iranian control over HizbAllah by the Iranian terrorist network. It appears that American officials remain oblivious to the growing threat to them as well. Well, actually one American did not seem oblivious to the growing Russian threat. Asked about it in an interview Thursday, Sarah Palin said, "you can't blink" - even if that meant conflict with Russia.

Hmm.... Let's see how this might develop.

Two Russian Tu-160 strategic bombers land in Venezuela, nuclear battle cruiser on way (Debkafiles 10 September), Iran diverts UF6 uranium from Isfahan to boost covert military nuclear project (Debkafiles 12 September), Russia lines up with Syria, Iran against America and the West (Debkafiles 12 September). This article deals with the fact that a permanent Russian presence in the Mediterranean is now a fact of life. According to Debkafiles, the Russians are not planning to start another Cold War in Europe. Based on what this writer knows of the background of the Russian prime minister, Vladimir Putin, a renewed Cold War is not in the cards. A good veteran of the Russian Spetsnaz is not going to settle for a Cold War. That is not how they fight. Debkafiles (let's not forget that Debkafiles is the back door information drop of Israel's Mossad - these are spies talking) summarizes the article this way.

In aligning with Tehran and Damascus, Moscow stands not only against America but also Israel. This volatile world region is undergoing cataclysmic changes at a time when Israel is virtually without a fully competent prime minister and key political and military decision-making by the rest of the government is at a standstill.

That's sort of it for the bad news. Well, almost. This e-mail came to me from a lady who is a veteran in the news business.

Dear ____ , My contacts in the governments in both Washington and Jerusalem are telling me that nuclear war with Iran could be just weeks away.

I asked her if she could give me any verification. This was her answer.

This person has had close personal relationships with I believe every Israeli P.M since Shamir, and is in and out of the White House like a fiddler's elbow. He is reliable and very truthful.

I don't feel comfortable passing on what amounts to a rumor. But on the other hand, I don't feel comfortable not publicizing this somehow. So, make of this what you will.

But the point that Debkafiles makes about the Israeli government - that it is leaderless and paralyzed - is the opening for what this writer views as the good news coming out of the region - and one of the few signs of hope for the People of Israel.

Last week, on 11 September, it was reported in the Jerusalem Post, "that soldiers clashed with settlers near the settlement of Yitzhar, south of Nablus, after they began throwing rocks at passing Palestinian cars." The same article reported "in the Binyamin Region (where I live), settlers attacked officials from the Civil Administration of Judea and Samaria who had arrived at the illegal Yad Yair outpost to confiscate equipment that was allegedly being used for illegal construction." The article itself complained that "settlers" were, according to the IDF, crossing "red lines" with their violence and that the judicial system was not being harsh enough with them.

Let's see, a Jew fires into the air to defend himself from an Arab mob, and he is taken into custody, forced to explain his behavior. The Arab mob, which had attempted to murder him by pelting stones at his car was allowed to go free. A teenager protesting the illegal expulsion of Jews is jailed for months and called an enemy to the state, while when Arabs murder Jews routinely, the state does nothing. This has been the "narrative" of events for several years now. It is about time that Jews stopped asking for their rights as citizens and started taking them.

Arutz Sheva reported this evening that when an Arab terrorist stabbed a boy near Yitzhar, the residents attacked an Arab village. According to the article, An Arab terrorist stabbed a nine-year-old boy at the Shalhevet (named after Shalhevet Pass, a infant murdered by an Arab sniper Hevron) hilltop community near Yitzhar in Samaria on the Sabbath while he torched an empty house and tried to set fire to a second building. The boy suffered light injuries when he was attacked after spotting the Arab towards dawn. Dozens of residents of Yitzhar retaliated and attacked the adjacent Arab village of Asira al-Kabaliya, where it is suspected the terrorist resides. Villagers claimed that the Jews rioted in the village, destroyed houses, overturned vehicles and shot at least two Arabs. Arabs threw rocks and stones at the Jews until IDF soldiers arrived, broke up the riot sand slapped a curfew on the village. The troops arrested one suspect in the stabbing. According to Arutz Sheva, Arab Knesset member, Ahmed Tibi, called the Jews "two legged animals, and Meretz Memeber of the Knesset Zahava Gal-On demanded that Security Minister Ehud Barak take action against the "violent settlers". The fact that an Arab had attempted to burn buildings in a Jewish village was apparently unimportant in the eyes of the honorable traitor.

However, the good news here is that Jews finally are demonstrating that they no longer fear Arabs and that the violence between Jews and Arabs in Samaria has changed in its nature, with Jews attacking Arabs when Arabs attack Jews.

With the newspapers filled with nothing but downers about the Middle East, it's about time.
